Drop a Comment, Pick Up a T-Shirt

by The Wire on June 16, 2009

For the first time in our 100-year history, we’re allowing the community to comment on our stories, videos and photos. Find yourself with what to say after reading or seeing something on this blog? Don’t be shy! Drop a comment and let us know. Positive or negative—we’re interested.

Periodically, we’ll look over the comments and highlight those we think are interesting in future editions of The Wire. If we select your comment, we’ll also send you one of our hot, new t-shirts as our thanks for letting us know what’s going through your head.

And stay tuned for details on how to purchase a tee, the proceeds of which will go to benefit our causes.

Questions?

by Mitch on June 16, 2009

My older son just turned seven years old and from time to time (okay, about every hour or so) likes to ask simple questions that aren’t so easy to answer. That’s what seven-year-olds do, right? For example, recently we were at the Israeli Independence Day Festival when he turned and asked, “If Israel is the Jewish state, where’s the Christian state?”

If that wasn’t hard enough to deal with, a few weeks later, he struck again. This time we were driving over to Boyle Heights for Fiesta Shalom when he suddenly said, “Dad, how come the Jewish people chose Israel as the Jewish state? I mean there seems to be a lot of wars there.”

Rough ones, right? [Read more…]

Israeli Independence Day Festival

by The Wire on June 16, 2009

Beautiful weather. Check. Delicious food. Check. Israeli music and dancing. Check. Kinda like last year’s Israel Independence Day Festival, right?

Not exactly.

This year’s festival was a little different. In addition to the games, petting zoo, Israeli martial art performances, and shawarma trucks, guests had the opportunity to participate in some fresh tikkun olam—healing the world.

Boyle Heights Does Fiesta Shalom

by The Wire on June 16, 2009

Jews and Latinos have a strong historical connection to Boyle Heights. In the early twentieth century, the East L.A. neighborhood was teeming with kosher butchers, bakeries, delis, the whole mishpucha. You may have heard of the Breed Street Shul, the largest Orthodox synagogue in the western U.S. between 1915 and 1951. And while the shul still stands (it’s currently going through a big-time restoration, with the help of the Federation), the area is now 95 percent Latino.

Del Rey Dinner honors Tootsie Veprin

by The Wire on June 16, 2009

A person’s name often says a lot about the kind of life they lead. Not to say that if you’re born with the name Rob Jones you’re going to wind up leading an average life. But, let’s face it, with a name like Tootsie Veprin, it’s pretty much a given that you’re in for an unusual ride.

She was born and raised in San Francisco and worked with her husband Billy in a variety of interesting business ventures throughout her life. They owned a small delicatessen, a dry cleaning plant, several businesses on the tiny Pacific island of Guam and traveled all over the world. Through it all, she’s been passionately dedicated to the Jewish community, no matter where she’s lived. During her ten years on Guam, for instance, she would invite U.S. Servicemen to her home to celebrate the Jewish holidays. [Read more…]

Who’s a Happy Camper Now?

by The Wire on June 16, 2009

Every year, the Federation helps more than 1,000 children from underserved communities get ready for camp by providing clothing, toiletries, books and other camp necessities so many of us take for granted. Most of the gear is provided by generous donations from local Los Angeles businesses and given out in a cool, carnival atmosphere. This year, t-shirts were supplied by American Apparel, entertainment by Radio Disney and a fun hockey rink was sponsored by the Los Angeles Kings. Former Dodger Lee Lacy was also on hand to sign autographs.

Hear Me Roar: Janis Black Warner

by The Wire on June 16, 2009

I’ve been a Lion since 2007.

I first got involved with the Federation when I was 18 years old. I was a member of the Young Women’s Evening Division, and I modeled in a fashion show that I organized from my Aunt Jeannie’s store, Lippman’s, on Pico.

I’m a Lion because I feel the strength, bond and common leadership of these fabulous women.

On a typical day, you can usually find me writing and researching quotes for my second book of inspirations. My grandfather, Jack Black, and my father Stanley, wrote several. I’ve given out 2,000 of my books to people from all over, including Bill Clinton and Bill Cosby. [Read more…]
